I think that you're on the right track with your modifications! Be sure that aesthetic changes are significant and unique - they should take you some time. I'd highly recommend trying out with creating your own custom assets if you can! Oh, and a tip with making new levels is to make each unique and special - new mechanics, obstacles, and challenges can help immensely with this.
